5K Run Raises $50,000 to support childhood heart disease prevention

The Second Annual Robbie's Run, held April 29, 2007 in Merrick, N.Y., was a resounding success on every level, including money raised, number of participants and supporters. The event, a 5k run and children's fun run to raise money to support the goals of the Robbie Levine Foundation and to honor the memory of nine-year-old Robbie Levine, who died in 2005 of sudden cardiac arrest, has become a fixture on the Merrick landscape.

The event raised over $50,000, nearly double that raised at last year's first Robbie's Run. Profits will help supply automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) to youth sports leagues, support childhood heart disease education programs and more.

Robbie's Run sponsors this year were C-Bass, LLC and Coleman Family Camps. Additional sponsorships and donations included food, raffle prizes, giveaways and entertainment on the day of the Run. Additional support for the Run and the Robbie Levine Foundation came on the day of the Run from elected officials in attendance including Senator Charles Fuschillo, Councilwoman Angie Cullen, Legislator Dave Denenberg and Assemblyman Dave McDonough.

More than 1,500 runners and kids' fun runners participated in this year's events, and many more volunteers helped out both before and during the Run. Total attendance on the day of the Run was more than 2,000 including volunteers, runners and attendees.

Several organized running teams participated including:
  • Rolling Thunder Running Club
  • Cure of Ars Track Team
  • Calhoun High School Lacrosse Team
  • Runners Edge Running Club

The Bellmore Little League received an AED for their league in recognition of being the little league with the largest number of registrants (not including Merrick).

The overall winner of the 5k Run was Jonathan Cuomo of Shirley, N.Y. The female winner was Marline Mignanu of North Merrick, N.Y. Raffle prize winners included The Adelberg family, who will be enjoying a three-night all-inclusive stay at the AMSHA Marina Hotels in the Dominican Republic and the Intravaia family, who won a weekend in Washington, D.C.
